“60% of the adults in Southern Sudan have never heard of HIV Aids.”
This husband, wife and brother are infected with HIV Aids. They are among a large mass of disease infected people that lack proper medical supplies. Treatable diseases such as Malaria and Cholera are often the fate of many due to the lack of medical supplies (vaccinations) and properly trained medical works.
Dr. Thon (Sudanese/Canadian) is at the center of this photograph surrounded by his team of nurses. It is estimated that there is 1 doctor per 20,000 in need in Southern Sudan. Malaria deaths in children would drop by 63% if only they would sleep under mosquito nets at night.
This mans name is Joel. Joel is the primary subject Nadus focused on when studying the medical needs of Southern Sudan. Joel is HIV Aids positive. Joel supports his wife and brother by selling fish. They barely survive off what little money he makes. Joel has 9 children that he had to relinquish responsibility for once becoming too weak to take care of them.
As the Nadus film crew was at a hospital in Southern Sudan, a pick-up truck quickly drove up to the doors of the building to unload many that were wounded due to a grenade attack. Evidently, those injured tripped a wire with a grenade on the other end. This trap was left over from the war.
While visiting the children’s ward at the Yei Hospital in Southern Sudan, we found this young boy on his death bed. Believed to have Malaria, this young child found help to late in his sickness. This young boy was expected to die within a day of this photograph. His irregular breathing and blank stare was an indicator that his death was imminent.
