Medical Care

I develop a headache just thinking about that devastating statistic. In some ways, it would be an easier reality to “accept” if the medical needs in Southern Sudan weren’t easily treatable. At least then we could say to ourselves, “Well, what could I do anyway?”

But the shocking news is that many of the illnesses that kill children and adults in Southern Sudan every day ARE preventable and treatable.

While in Sudan, Nadus was able to spend time with Dr. Thon Giei, a local physician. As he points out, "The war has left nothing standing. Hospitals collapsed, total health infrastructure collapsed, doctors migrated. Seventy-five percent of our patients are here for malaria. The leading cause of deaths in Southern Sudan is malaria, and malaria is treatable."

Illnesses such as malaria, cholera and other water-borne maladies can all be prevented! For the Sudanese, the lack of clean water and basic medical supplies means a mosquito bite or a drink of water could be fatal. And, while AIDS is constantly taking its toll on Sudan, 60% of Sudanese have never even heard of HIV/AIDS.

Solving these problems

Nadus Films spent a lot of time this past summer documenting the medical needs in Southern Sudan. We spent time with a family who are all HIV positive, who depend on selling fish and corn to buy the medicine to make it through the day. We also spent a full day at a medical clinic. Filming was near impossible at times. I had to wear sunglasses to hide my tears while watching kids endure the last moments of their lives.

It can be hard to get motivated to do anything when the task seems overwhelming. And the needs in Sudan are so, so many. Here’s the thing though: improving medical care in Sudan is NOT impossible. WE can help do this. Nadus Films is already working with strategic partners to organize trips to Sudan. Vaccines, health education, mosquito nets, clean water---these are all things that you and I can make possible for many!

How investing in film is a solution

By investing in Nadus Films and "The New Sudan" you will be investing your money directly into saving lives in Southern Sudan. The purpose of this full-length documentary is to shine a light on the reality of life and the needs in this war-torn nation, to show the immense hope that the people hold for the future, to illustrate the tangible ways in which others around the world can make a difference there. But, like we say, awareness is not enough. We don’t want to just make their voice heard, we want to answer their cries for help!

Donate for Change

On February 16th, you will be contacted and asked to contribute monthly to Nadus Films. Without the financial help and support of people like you, we can do nothing. Please consider committing to a monthly contribution towards seeing “The New Sudan” completed and used as a catalyst for change. Make a one-time donation. If you’ve ever wanted to change the world, here is your chance to start.
